Young Adult Services

The Young Adult Division of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library welcomes students, teachers and parents to "check out" our resources, services and programs for teens. Our goal is to meet the educational, informational and recreational needs of students in grades 7-12 or ages 12-18 throughout the year.

Students Using the Library for Research, Study and Homework

Library staff is available at all locations to help students gather information and resources necessary for homework and research. Some locations have special Vertical Files of information commonly used to complete school projects. YA collections include literary classics, books on popular topics and hot issues and special collections for career, college and financial aid.

Special pathfinders are available in print and online at the Library's web site to direct you to resources useful for students doing research on topics such as Literature, Careers, Health, Financial Aid and The Day You Were Born.

Choosing a College

College-bound juniors and seniors should realize that it's never too early to start organizing information. Our collection includes many college catalogs; some are available on the Internet. The YA Division distributes ACT packets and Financial Aid forms throughout the year. Financial Aid Workshops conducted by representatives of the LA Office of Student Financial Assistance (LOSFA) and ACT practice tests sponsored by the Princeton Review also are offered periodically. Computerized practice tests and tutorials are available through the Library's Learning Express database on site or remotely via the Internet 24/7.

Tutoring

Volunteer math tutors serve at the Main Library and the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library. Our Community Information Database lists tutors in the online catalog under the subject heading "tutors and tutoring -- LIS."

Programs

The YA Division hosts special programs designed for young adults throughout the year including free workshops for ACT Preparation and Financial Aid as well as crafts and other programs of interest to teens. Monthly programs are listed in the Library Calendar of Events . In most cases, pre-registration is required. The YA Division is also part of a nationwide pen-pal program .

Recreational Reading

From the newest Redwall or Star Wars book to hit TV programs like Moesha, Sabrina and Clueless, the YA Division tries to make recreational reading fun and current. There are many excellent writers that have appeal to young adults as well as adults. Non-fiction keeps current with such subjects as urban legends, the Titanic, popular biography and the latest in careers for the next century. Magazines range from Teen People to Cycle World and Choices.

Tours and Library Visits

Young Adult Librarians work with public, private and parochial schools to provide tours of the library, booktalks and in-class visits to specific library resources for research.

Summer Reading Club

The Young Adult Division participates each year in the statewide Summer Reading Club Program for Teens, offering incentives for reading and presenting special events throughout the summer for teens at all Library locations.
