1921(?)-2005

Mary Mason Gordon

“Mrs. Mary Mason Gordon, nee Mary Georgie Davis, was a native of Plains, LA and a resident of Baton Rouge.  She was the daughter of Caroline Butler Mason and George Davis.

Mary was baptized at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and later joined St. Mark United Methodist Church.  At St. Mark she became a member of the choir and the Women’s Society of Christian Service, later renamed United Methodist Women.  She was the first woman to become a member of the Board of Trustees at St. Mark.  In addition to serving as secretary to the Administrative Council for over 20 years, she was a member of various boards and agencies of the local church, the District and Conference levels of the United Methodist Church.  She was a featured writer of the St. Mark Times church newsletter.

Ms. Mary retired from the East Baton Rouge Parish School System as an Executive Administrative Assistant for 36 years, paving the way and opening doors for many Black educators, and E.B.R. employees.

Her voice was recognized as the host of The Mary Mason Gordon Show on WXOK for 46 years.  Her opening with “Hi Friends” and her closing line, “I’ll see you in church” were heard every Sunday as she interviewed personalities in Baton Rouge and surrounding areas.  With her show, she was able to hold the pulse of the Black Baton Rouge community with news and activities from churches, organizations and politics.  Additionally, during the 50’s and beyond, she was the society writer for The Newsleader, a publication for the Black Community.

She was a member of the Modern Ladies, Friends of Delta, the YWCA and the Baton Rouge Kiwanis Club.  She held honorary positions of various levels all over the city of Baton Rouge.

Ms. Mary died on Saturday, September 24, 2005 at the Jacinto Health Care Center in Houston, TX at the age of 84.”
