“Councilwoman Lorri A. Burgess has strong ties to the citizens of Baton Rouge, especially those in South Baton Rouge’s District 10. As a native, it’s her home and where she has and continues to invest her efforts to encourage community development, revitalization, and the enrichment of its residents.
Lorri has a commitment to public service. This commitment is evident in her participation in impacting change and expanding her knowledge to serve. She is a past Board Member of Louisiana Technology Park and Baton Rouge Center for World Affairs, and the Greater Baton Rouge Port Commission. During her tenure at the Port she served as the first African-American chairwoman for the authority. Lorri is a strong supporter of the YWCA Encore Plus, Sisters Supporting Sisters and HIV/AIDS Education. Three of Lorri’s initiatives have been the Camp 10 Summer Computer Camp held each year in June and the Summer Reading Program for elementary children in District 10. Lorri also spearheaded a model Exercise Program for Senior Citizens in the City-Parish. In addition, she has partnered with Sigma Gamma Rho and Zeta Phi Beta Sororities with educational and enrichment programs in writing and language and visual arts for students in East Baton Rouge Parish. Lorri has traveled throughout the United States of America, Puerto Rico, Canada and Europe to learn, interact, collaborate, and expand resources to allow her to serve her community more efficiently.
Under her leadership as the Executive Director of the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation, Lorri has annually increased the number of clients that participate in the program. She has implemented new programs that have earned the Foundation national recognition for being the most improved sickle cell foundation in the U.S.
In 1996, Lorri launched her first political campaign. She successfully won her election bid for the City Council, serving as the Metropolitan Councilwoman for District 10. Since becoming a member of the Council she served on the Capital Improvements committee for two years and has chaired the Finance and Executive Committee. After returning to the Council for her second term, she was selected to serve as the first elected African-American Mayor Pro-tempore for the Parish of East Baton Rouge, City of Baton Rouge. Ms. Burgess is currently serving her 3rd term representing District 10. Ms. Burgess is a graduate of McKinley Senior High School, and a graduate of Louisiana State University. She has also completed the Paralegal Studies Program of the Division of Continuing Educations at LSU.”
