"The Honorable Freddie Pitcher, Jr., is a native South Baton Rougean. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1962 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Southern University in 1966. He completed legal studies and received the Juris Doctor degree from Southern University Law Center in 1973. After several years of vigorous private legal practice, he was elected city-wide as the first African American City Court Judge in the history of Baton Rouge. Four years later, in 1987, he stood for a seat on the 19th Judicial District. Again, he was successful in a city-wide election. The seat on the 19th Judicial Court Bench was another first for an African American. In the fall elections of 1992, he was unopposed in his run for Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeals. This seat was also a first. A part of his busy schedule included service as an adjunct professor of law at the Southern University Law Center. He has served in the same capacity at Louisiana State University' s Paul M. Hebert Law Center."
Currently he serves as a full professor and Chancellor of Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, appointed October 14, 2003. Chancellor Pitcher is a member of the American, National, and Baton Rouge Bar Associations. He is admitted to practice before the United States Eastern, Middle and Western District Courts of Louisiana and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, Baton Rouge Recreation Commission Foundation, Woman's Hospital Founders and Friends Endowment, Our Lady of the Lake College, and Young Leaders Academy of Baton Rouge, Omega Psi Phi and Sigma Pi Phi fraternities.
