Eula Mae Hatter

Gospel Artist

1921-2000

Eula Mae Hatter

“Eula Mae Hatter was born December 17, 1921 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Eula and Matthew Hatter.  She was “called and baptized at a young age at the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully for more than 60 years.”

Ms. Hatter was “educated in the public school system of East Baton Rouge Parish and was a graduate of McKinley High School.  She also attended Southern University.  In 1954, she began her radio career.  Her first show was called “Cousin Carrie Gospel Hour” from 1954 to 1965; the name of the show was later changed to the “Eula Mae Hatter Gospel Hour.”  Ms. Hatter’s Show was rated as one of the top shows on WXOK and extended across nine Louisiana parishes.  Ms. Hatter had an extensive, faithful listening audience, whom she loved dearly.”

Ms. Hatter was “founder and president of the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church Sisterhood for thirty-five years.  She served as pianist of the Senior Choir, member of the Deaconess Board, Trustee Board and Church Mission.  She was affiliated with the Emmanuel Baptist Church Aid Association of Louisiana, and organized the “Cousin Carrie Gospel Choir” which traveled throughout the state spreading Christian music for many years.  She was also a member of the James Cleveland Gospel Music Workshop of America and a member of the McKinley Alumni Association.  In addition, she served on the Board of the Lutheran Restoration and Beautification Committee.”

Ms. Hatter has “received countless awards and recognitions in honor of her spreading the gospel via the airway.  Perhaps her greatest reward was the opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ through her music, which was also a network for gospel news to hundreds of faithful listeners.”

“On Tuesday, July 4, 2000, she departed this life at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.”
