Edward Barnes was born in Lakeland, LA. At age ten, he and his family moved to Baton Rouge. He exhibited innate artistic abilities as a child and demonstrated his passion for art in high school. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1956. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge. “He later earned both his Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in sculpture from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, two degrees he was initially apprehensive about pursuing, since no Blacks prior to him had ever received such. At Louisiana State University, Barnes studied under the tutelage of the late noted German sculptor, Armin Scheler.” Currently, Mr. Barnes works as an art instructor, both privately and publicly, and works in his art gallery creating paintings and sculptures in Baton Rouge’s Mid-City. “His work can be found in both public and private collections throughout the country.” He resides in Baton Rouge with his wife of thirty-six years, Sylvia K. Barnes. They are the parents of two sons, Edward, Jr., and Gregory, and grandparents to two granddaughters, Ta’lor and Kennedi.
