SURFING THE INTERNET:
A SAFETY GUIDE FOR CHILDREN
Welcome to the Internet! The Internet is a wonderful source of information about our world. You may have already discovered many fun and amazing places to visit on the Web. You may have used the Internet for homework assignments, to find out about your favorite pet, or just for fun. You may also have heard that the Internet can be a dangerous place for kids to visit. Most of the sites on the Internet are safe, but some of the sites and people on the Internet might be dangerous for children. Many of these sites are for adults only and should not be visited by kids. And you should treat strangers on the Internet with as much caution as you would in the real world. Our handout will help you to learn to use the Internet safely. Please read our safety tips and visit the list of web sites to learn more about kid safety on the Internet.
SAFETY TIPS
The following safety tips, adapted from the ALA's Librarian's Guide To Cyberspace For Parents & Kids, will help you have a safe and enjoyable time "Surfing the Net".
- Always ask your parents' permission before using your full name, address, telephone number or school name anywhere on the Internet.
- Always tell your parents or other adult you trust if you see something online that is scary or that you don't understand.
- Don't respond to messages that make you feel uncomfortable or uneasy.
- Never give out a credit card number or password online.
- Never arrange to meet in person someone you've met online unless you discuss it with your parents and an adult goes with you.
- Not everything you see or hear on the Internet is true. Learn to tell the difference between true and false information.

INTERNET USE AT THE LIBRARY
The East Baton Rouge Parish Library provides computers for children to search the Internet at the Main Library and each of our branch libraries. Computers in the Children's Room may be used by adults and teens between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. only. After 2:00 p.m., Children's Room computers are reserved for children ages 11 and under or adults who are accompanied by children of these ages. Adults who need to keep close by their children in the Children's Room and adults who want to use the computers with their children are allowed to do so. After 2:00 pm everyone aged 12 and older must use computers in other areas of the library. Children ages 11 and under may use computers in the other areas of the library ONLY when accompanied by an adult. Thank you for your cooperation!
All of the public access computers in the Children's areas of our libraries are filtered, which means that the Library uses a software program to block adult sites on the Internet as well as other Internet sites that fall into categories not allowed by our Internet Access Policy. Filters are not perfect, and sometimes a place on the Internet that should be blocked will appear on the computer screen. You should follow the same safety rules as you would on any computer, just in case the filter does not work. Library staff members will help you to use the computers and answer any of your questions about the Internet.
