Individuals

There are many ways in which individuals like avid readers, librarians, and teachers can participate in the The Big Read: One Book/One Community program.

Here are a few possibilities:

  • Read the book and discuss with friends, family, colleagues, book clubs, classes...and the list goes on..
  • Attend a Reading and Discussion Group
  • Serve as a Reading and Discussion Group Leader
  • Share information with others
  • Train students to be discussion leaders and moderators
  • Research the author
  • Write the next chapter -- what happened later?
  • Compare and contrast novel with play or film

Community Involvement/Groups

How can your organization participate? Any social or professional organization, group of family, friends, or neighbors can easily get involved.

Here are a few ways:

  • Read the book
  • Serve on a committee
  • Attend or host a Reading Discussion Group
  • Host a play
  • Host a film viewing
  • Host an online discussion
  • Develop activities that tie in to the themes of The Great Gatsby.
  • Plan or host a related program in the workplace designed to discuss key issues raised in the selected book
  • Link to The Big Read: One Book/One Community webpage from your webpage
  • Advertise the program externally, through your own mailers, signs, billboards, websites, newsletters, account notices, etc.

  

Corporations/Business

How can your business contribute? From small business, to large corporations, all industries can easily get involved.

Here are a few ways:

  • Advertise the program within your company
  • Encourage employees to read the book
  • Encourage employees to attend a Reading and Discussion Group
  • Encourage employees to attend a related program
  • Host a Reading and Discussion Group within your organization
  • Host an Online Discussion
  • Plan or host a related program in the workplace designed to discuss key issues raised in the selected book
  • Recruit and train Discussion Group Leaders from your company
  • Underwrite copies of the Discussion Guide for community distribution
  • Purchase copies of the book for members of your organization
  • Purchase or underwrite copies of the book for other organizations
  • Underwrite a related program or a speaker event
  • Link to The Big Read: One Book/One Community webpage from your webpage
  • Advertise the program externally, through your own mailers, signs, billboards, websites, newsletters, account notices, etc.
  • Underwrite American Sign Language interpreters for programs
  • Underwrite promotional products
